As a result of the amazing football season Indiana University has had, that included winnig the College Football National Title, Indiana University branded product sales are at an all-time high. And with this new popularity, you may be asking yourself the question, can I produce and sell Indiana University branded product?

The answer is yes you can produce and sell Indiana University branded products, however, before doing so, you must obtain official approval directly from the University.

Indiana University, like most large universities and colleges, operates a Trademark Licensing Program that oversees the use of their name and logos ensuring that their name and logos are used in a way that the University approves of. Indiana University has complete legal control of the use of their name and logos due to the existing trademark laws of the United States.

How do you get permission to sell Indiana University branded products?

As general guidance, to gain permission you would get in touch with those that manage the Indiana University Trademark Licensing Program, this is a department located within the University.

But before reaching out to the University, be sure to have a solid idea of the product you would like to produce, how you will source the item, and how you plan to sell the item, as those that manage Indiana University Trademark Licensing will expect to hear a quick pitch of your idea. If they like your idea they will guide you to the next step in the licensing process, if they aren’t sure your idea would be a success, they might suggest you go back to the drawing board, find another idea, and circle back to them.

If the Indiana University Trademark Licensing program feels that you have a solid product idea they will point you to the application process with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC Licensing), the University’s licensing agent.

Which license type is right for me, the Crafters License or the Standard License?

Knowing which license type is right for you and your business is key to know prior to starting the application process with the Collegiate Licensing Company. Its key because the requirements and process for securing the different licenses varies greatly.

About the Crafters License

The Crafters License is intended for those that produce Indiana University branded items in small quantities. This license limits the amount of product that you can produce and sell within a calendar year, the limit is measured in either dollars or units. Many colleges and universities limit the Crafters License to $2,500 in sales or 500 units of the product sold. Other limitations placed on the Crafters License include the following, the item must be produced by hand and the item must not be sold into wholesale. With the heavy limitations in place, the application requirements are pretty low, meaning if you apply to hold a Crafters License and the University approves of the item you are producing, you are likely to be approved.

About the Standard License

The Standard License is intened for those that don’t want the limitations of the Crafters License as this license type allows you to have, in theory, unlimited sales either through Direct Sales or Wholesale Sales. In addiiton, the Standard License has no limitation on how the item is produced, however, many colleges and universities have Codes of Conduct guiding producers on the ethical practices that need to be applied when producing branded products. And unlike the Crafters License, the Standard License is much more difficult to secure. You must have a business plan in place that includes details on how the item will be produced, where it will be sold and how the overall business with be marketed to potential customers.
