What was the best selling collegiate licensed product in 2025? This question is actually not easily answered as data about collegiate product sales is held in private by the various licensing agencies that represent the nation’s colleges and universities. However, using data that we know to be true, we can make a strong estimation of which collegiate licensed item sold the best in 2025.
What we know to be true is that the University of Texas in 2012 was the top selling university, and since 2012 the University of Texas has not slowed in its achievments that would keep licensing revenue rolling in. If we take a look at the 2025 Collegiate Licensing Royalty Rankings we can see that the Texas Longhorns are estimated to be at the top of the list with football achievements and strong social media presence being their main drivers. So if the University of Texas is thought to be the #1 ranked school in merchandise licensing revenue, which of their products were the best sellers in 2025?
For the purposes of our analysis we will review the Fanatics website as Fanatics is thought to be the largest (sells the most) seller of officially licensed collegiate products.
We should look at the best selling item in two ways:
What item sold the most units
What item earned the most dollars
For units sold we should identify an item that has wide appeal and has a lower price point. To find the item that earned the most dollars we need to locate an item that sold a lot of units but also sold at a high price point To accomplish this, we analyzed the products being sold within the University of Texas' Fanatics website. Why analyze Fanatics? Fanatics is thought to be the number one volume seller of officially licensed products (MLB, NFL, etc.) and is likely the number one volume seller of officially licensed collegiate products.
What item sold the most units?
The Fanatics web page of the University of Texas defaults to showing the "Most Popular" items, and the product in the number one spot one the web page is the officially licensed University of Texas football jersey of Arch Manning with an original retail price of $139.99 and currently marked down to $90.99. No doubt this item was popular in 2025 and sold very well, but in our estimation, it is unlikely that this item sold the most units as not everyone wants to wear a football jersey (does not have wide appeal) and the price point is on this high side.
If we scan the web page a little bit further we see a basic University of Texas t-shirt with a price point of $24.99, due to the general wide appeal of t-shirts (many people wear them), the straightforward design of the shirt, and the low price point, it would be our estimation that this University of Texas t-shirt could have been the best selling (sold the most units) collegiate item in 2025.
What item earned the most dollars?
For comparison to the item that sold the most units, we are now identifying an item that sells very well, but in a lower amount than the t-shirt we identified. And importqntly, this item will sell at a higher price amount, allowing the item to earn more dollars per unit sold.
Again we see the see the Arch Manning Football jersey in the #1 spot on the web page, however, despite its high price point and popularity, we doubt the jersey had enough units sold in order for it to have earned the most dollars of all collegiate licensed items in 2025. The item that likely drove the most dollars is displayed on the web page right next to the Arch Manning jersey, this item is the Texas Longhorns Nike Primetime Club Fleece Pullover Hoodie. Why the Hoodie? Sweatshirts in general sell in high volume (have wide appeal) and have a higher price point.
